Gniezno

Gniezno, like Rome, was built on seven hills. The whole municipality is located in Wielkopolska, Wysoczyzna Gnieźnieńska, which is a natural watershed dividing the basin of Warta and Vistula rivers.

Like Rome, the city of Gniezno was built on seven hills. It is located in the region of Wielkopolska, and its area is a natural watershed, where the basins of the Warta and Vistula rivers meet.

Gniezno was the first Polish capital city and the first church metropolis, currently serving as the seat of Gniezno county and its archdiocese. According to legend, the name of the city derives from the word “nest” (“gniazdo”), and is associated with the story of how the Polish state was created. The first records of the town’s history come from the times when the second Polish king, Bolesław Chrobry was in power. The name of the town first appeared on the king’s denarius coin in 1000 AD, and twenty-five years later Gniezno became the seat of his coronation ceremony. At the beginning of the 14th century, having been looted and destroyed by the Teutonic Order, the town experienced a fall, yet was later rebuilt by king Kazimierz Wielki. The current shape of Gniezno is the result of reconstruction works that took place at the beginning of the 19th century. After a fire in 1819, a new spatial layout was planned, in which an old market square was marked and a new Bolesław Chrobry street was created. Other 19th-century buildings include the town hall, the gasworks, the station and the barracks. Today, Gniezno is above all a great centre of magnificent monuments, with its Cathedral and with the Gniezno Doors – a unique treasure of the Romanesque art of casting
